Spider Mites on Houseplants: Signs, Damage and What to Do
You turn over a marked leaf and find a dusty-looking underside. In bright light, a tiny speck moves. Fine threads may cling to a vein, leaf stalk or the gap between two leaves. These signs often point to spider mites, although thrips, dried spray residue and problems with watering, light or roots can leave similar marks.
Start by making space around the plant, looking closely at the damaged leaves and checking the plants nearest to it. What comes next depends on what you find: a few mites in one easy-to-clean area, heavy webbing on a dense plant, or early signs on several plants.
Found suspicious damage? Start here
Spider mites are often manageable, especially when you catch them early. Start with these five steps, then choose a method based on what you find.
- Stop the leaves from touching other plants. Make space around the suspected plant. If moving a large or trailing plant would brush it through the collection, move the neighbouring plants first and work around the affected plant where it stands.
- Look before cleaning. Photograph the damage, then inspect the leaf undersides in bright light from the side. A hand lens or phone macro lens can reveal mites, eggs, shed skins and fine silk that are difficult to see with the naked eye.
- Check the closest plants. Start with leaves that touched the affected plant, plants on the same crowded shelf or cabinet level, and any nearby plant showing new pale speckling.
- Remove visible mites and webbing when the plant can handle it. A gentle rinse, a damp cloth on broad sturdy leaves or the removal of heavily webbed foliage can reduce the mites and silk you can reach.
- Decide what you will use before spraying anything. Some sprays should not be used one after another, and many can kill predatory mites.
For the first inspection, a bright lamp, plain white paper, a hand lens and a phone or camera are enough. Bring out cloths, cutting tools and a bag for removed foliage after you know that the plant can be cleaned or pruned safely.
Already sprayed the plant or released predatory mites? Photograph and inspect it, then read the product instructions before rinsing or adding anything else. Washing may remove released predators. Rinsing a sprayed leaf also does not prove that any remaining residue is harmless to them.
What spider mites are and what they do to houseplants
Spider mites are tiny plant-feeding mites in the family Tetranychidae. They are arachnids, so they are more closely related to spiders and ticks than to insects. Many adult spider mites are much smaller than 1 mm and look like moving dots without magnification.
Several species can occur on ornamental plants. The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is especially widespread and well studied. You usually do not need to identify the species before separating and inspecting the plant. You may need a clearer identification before choosing a product or predator, because some work only against certain mites.
Why leaves become pale, dull or bronzed
Spider mites pierce individual leaf cells and feed from them. Each feeding point can leave a tiny pale mark. Scattered marks create the fine speckling, or stippling, often seen early in an infestation. As feeding continues, the marks can join together. A leaf may lose its shine, look grey-green or dull, turn yellow or develop a bronze cast.
Damaged cells do not turn green again after feeding stops, so old marks can remain on a recovering plant. Heavy feeding can leave too little healthy leaf tissue, leading to dry leaves, early leaf drop, weak growth and general decline.
The pattern varies with the mite, the plant, the leaf colour and the amount of feeding. Pale stippling is an important clue, but it cannot confirm spider mites on its own.
Why webbing appears
Many spider mites produce fine silk close to where they feed. Early strands can be almost invisible. As the population grows, silk may collect along veins, around leaf stalks, between touching leaves or across whole parts of the plant. It shelters the colony and can help the mites move.
Dense webbing often points to an established infestation, although some spider mites make less visible silk. Ordinary spiders also build webs around plants. Fine webbing is a much stronger clue when you also find stippled leaves and mites beneath them.
Why you need to check again
Eggs, young mites and adults can all be present on the plant at the same time. Beneath one leaf, you may find pale rounded eggs, empty shed skins and live mites together.
A rinse or wipe can remove some exposed mites and webbing while eggs or sheltered mites remain. The plant may look cleaner before the infestation is under control, which is why follow-up checks matter.
How quickly spider mites multiply depends on the mite, the plant and the temperature. Two-spotted spider mites, for example, develop faster in warmer conditions. Warm or dry air does not create spider mites; the mites first have to reach the plant.
Where spider mites come from and how they spread
A new plant, cutting or plant brought back indoors can carry a small population that is easy to miss. Mites can also crawl across touching leaves or move during normal plant care. Hands, cloths or tools used on an infested plant may carry them to the next plant if they are not cleaned first.
Spider mites crawl; they do not fly or jump from plant to plant. Some species can also travel on silk carried by air currents, especially when a colony is crowded or the plant is declining. In a home collection, touching foliage and tightly grouped plants are still the best places to begin your checks.
Different spider-mite species prefer different plants, but many common ornamental plants can host them.
Finding spider mites does not prove neglect. Even a careful owner can bring home a plant with a colony that was still too small to see.
How to tell whether spider mites are really the cause
Look for several signs together. One pale leaf is not enough. Neither is one moving speck. Spider mites become much more likely when typical leaf damage appears alongside live mites, eggs or shed skins and fine webbing close to the affected leaves.
Inspect the leaf undersides first
Choose leaves with new or typical damage and compare them with a cleaner leaf on the same plant. Shine light from the side so tiny bodies and strands of silk cast a shadow. Check the underside, the main veins, the bases of the leaf stalks, folds, places where leaves and stems meet, and tightly packed growth.
A hand lens with about 10× magnification is far more useful than colour alone. You may see rounded or oval mites among pale eggs, empty shed skins and fine silk. Spider mites can look pale yellow, greenish, orange, brown or red. The dark patches often associated with Tetranychus urticae can be difficult to judge at home.
Photograph the whole plant, both sides of a leaf showing typical damage, any webbing and a nearby area that still looks clear. These photos make later changes easier to see. They will also help a plant specialist if you need identification advice.
Use white paper to reveal tiny moving pests
Hold plain white paper beneath a suspicious leaf and tap the leaf over it. Tiny mites or insects that were difficult to see on the plant may fall onto the paper. Watch the specks in bright light and use magnification where possible.
The paper test shows that something small and mobile was on that part of the plant. It cannot identify the species, prove that the speck caused the damage or show that the plant is clear. After predatory mites have been released, beneficial mites may fall onto the paper as well.
Yellow or blue sticky traps catch some flying pests. Spider mites do not fly, so sticky traps are not a reliable way to find or monitor them. Inspect the plant itself.

Finding spider mites does not rule out thrips, scale or a separate care problem on the same plant. You may need to deal with both problems. Before combining a spray with another product or with predatory mites, check that they can be used together safely.
When you are still not sure
Keep the plant from touching its neighbours and pause before adding another treatment. Look again when the pest is too small to judge, the damage centres on badly distorted new growth, bronzing or scarring appears without webbing, or repeated checks fail to find mites that match the damage.
Photograph the whole plant, both sides of the damaged leaves, the newest marks and anything already used on the plant. Clear close-up photos and a list of previous treatments will help a plant specialist far more than one distant photo of a yellow leaf. This is especially useful before buying a predator that hunts only certain mites or adding another product after the first one failed.
Identifying a spider mite to species can require microscopy or laboratory methods. You are not expected to identify every mite from colour alone.
How serious is it on this plant, and how far has it spread?
Look at the affected plant first, then check the rest of the collection. One plant can be heavily webbed while its neighbours remain clear. Several plants can also carry small early populations before any one of them looks badly affected.
What does the affected plant look like?
You suspect spider mites but have not found them yet: the marks could fit spider mites, but you have not found live mites, eggs, shed skins or matching webbing.
You found a few mites in one accessible area: the signs are limited to a small part of the plant that you can inspect and clean. Webbing is absent or slight.
Fresh damage is spreading across the plant: new stippling appears on several leaves or growing points, mites keep turning up during checks, leaves are becoming dull or bronzed, or fine silk is easier to find.
The plant is heavily affected or difficult to clean: webbing covers larger areas, bronzing or yellowing is widespread, leaves are drying or dropping, new growth is damaged, mites are abundant, or the plant is too dense or fragile to inspect properly.
These descriptions help you decide how much of the plant you can reach and whether cleaning alone has a realistic chance of working.
How far might the mites have travelled?
Only the first plant shows signs: touching and nearby plants still look clear after close inspection.
Nearby plants may have been exposed: their leaves touched the affected plant, they shared a crowded shelf, or you used the same cloth or tool before cleaning it.
Several plants in one area show signs: more than one plant on the same shelf, cabinet level or windowsill has live mites, fresh webbing or matching new damage.
Mites have appeared in separate parts of the collection: fresh signs occur in different areas. A plant may have been missed, mites may have moved during plant care, or they may have arrived on more than one plant.
Check neighbouring plants in this order
- plants whose leaves touched the affected plant;
- plants on the same crowded shelf or cabinet level;
- plants you handled afterwards with the same unclean cloth or tool;
- nearby plants showing new pale stippling;
- dense plants whose leaf undersides are difficult to inspect; and
- the rest of the collection, working outwards from the affected area.
In a large collection, divide the room into manageable groups such as one shelf, cabinet or window. A short note of the groups you have checked can stop plants from being missed.
Check every plant that probably came into contact with the affected plant or shared the same crowded space. Treat each plant according to what you find. Some predatory-mite products are designed for prevention. Use them that way only when the instructions say so; an exposed plant does not automatically need treatment.
Do not spray every nearby plant just in case. Spraying all of them can damage sensitive leaves, kill predatory mites and make it harder to see which plants still have an active infestation.
Once you know which plants are affected, choose the simplest approach you can carry through from start to finish.
Choose a control method
Use the table to match the next step to what you found. A small problem in one easy-to-reach area may be managed with cleaning and close checks. When webbing is established, mites are spread across the plant, several plants are affected or fresh damage continues after cleaning, start one suitable treatment method as well.

Use cleaning alone only for a small problem you can reach and inspect thoroughly. When the infestation is established or much of the growth cannot be reached, clean only what the plant can tolerate and start one suitable treatment method at the same time.
Start with physical removal
How to clean different plants
A rinse or wipe can remove some exposed mites, shed skins and silk. It also gives you a clearer leaf surface for the next inspection. Choose a method the plant can tolerate.
Sturdy leaves: rinse them gently with clean water while supporting the leaves and stems. Aim at the undersides and sheltered areas without bruising the plant. Cover the potting mix if needed and let excess water drain.
Broad, smooth leaves: wipe them with a damp, soft cloth. Turn to a clean part of the cloth as you work so you lift material away instead of spreading it from leaf to leaf.
Fragile, felted, powdery or easily marked leaves: avoid wiping unless you know the leaves tolerate it. Wetting can also damage some leaf surfaces. Limited pruning or another method may be safer.
Trailing or climbing plants: work through one stem or section at a time. Keep checked growth apart from unchecked growth where possible. Inspect the back of each leaf, the bases of the leaf stalks, clips, ties and the parts of any trellis or support touching the leaves and stems.
A plant too large to move: move the neighbouring plants, protect the work area and clean the affected plant in sections. Keep it in suitable light and continue its normal care while it remains separated.
Cabinets and terrariums: inspect every plant in the enclosure and note where leaves, supports and tools touch. Avoid fogging or spraying the whole enclosure with a homemade mixture. The plants and any predatory mites inside may not tolerate the same spray.
Remove a badly webbed or collapsing leaf when this gives you better access and the plant still has enough healthy foliage. Put removed material straight into a bag or closed container before carrying it through the room, then clean the cutting tool.
Check trays, outer pots, clips and supports that touched infested foliage. Remove visible silk and fallen leaves, and wipe washable surfaces. Concentrate on the plant itself. Cleaning nearby surfaces is an extra precaution.
Planning to use predatory mites as well? Read the release instructions before a major wash or pruning session. The best order depends on the predator, the size of the infestation and the way the live product is supplied. Once predators have been released, avoid washing or spraying the plant unless the instructions say it is safe.
When cleaning alone may be enough
Cleaning alone may be reasonable to try when you found only a few mites, can reach every affected area, the plant tolerates handling and nearby plants remain clear.
Check frequently at first. Return to the same photographed leaves, nearby growth and a few areas that were clear at the start. Remove visible pest mites and fresh webbing again when they appear.
Continue with cleaning alone while mite numbers are falling, no new damage is appearing and nearby leaves remain clear. Add a suitable treatment when fresh stippling or webbing continues, mites turn up in places you cannot reach, more plants become affected, or repeated handling starts to damage the plant.
When cleaning is not enough
Choose either an approved mite-control product or suitable predatory mites. For an established or hard-to-reach infestation, clean only what the plant can tolerate and start the chosen treatment at the same time. For a smaller problem, add it if live mites, fresh webbing or new stippling continue after careful cleaning.
Use an approved mite-control product
A treatment product may help when cleaning is no longer enough. Find one approved for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Then make sure the label allows use on your plant indoors.
Find a product you can use safely
In the EU, plant-protection products are authorised by each country. Check your national authority's database or guidance, then read the label on the product itself. The European Commission explains how authorisation works across the EU.
Before buying, check that the label:
- names spider mites or the mite you are trying to control;
- allows use on indoor ornamental plants;
- is approved for home use when the database separates home and professional products; and
- does not exclude your type of plant.
A general insect or houseplant-pest product may not work on mites. The label must name spider mites, allow use on your plant and allow indoor use.
This advice is for ornamental houseplants. Use a product on herbs, fruit or other edible plants only when the label specifically allows that crop and use.

Read the label before you start
The label tells you how much to use, how to apply it, which surfaces to cover, when you may repeat it, how many applications are allowed and which plants or situations are excluded. It also gives the safety rules for storage, disposal, ventilation, children, pets, aquariums and returning to the treated room.
Some products work only when they touch the mites. Follow the coverage instructions carefully. Spider mites often feed beneath leaves and inside folds, so a quick mist over the top may miss them. Never increase the concentration or soak the plant beyond the directions.
When the label asks you to test a small part of the plant first, follow its method and waiting time. These can differ between products and plants.
Keep the packaging and make a short phone note with the product name, active ingredient, application date and next step on the label. This helps prevent accidental double treatment and gives you the details needed if you later consider predatory mites.
When the product seems to damage the plant
Stop adding products. Check what you used, how you mixed it, where and when you applied it, and which leaves were treated. Spray damage can appear as scorched, bleached or water-soaked patches, burnt leaf edges, or spots that follow the areas where the spray landed. The pattern varies between plants and products.
Follow any advice on the label and keep giving the plant its usual suitable light and water. Ask the manufacturer, retailer or an experienced plant specialist when the reaction is unclear. Keep looking for live mites. That will help you judge whether new marks came from the product or from continued feeding.
Use live predatory mites
Predatory mites are tiny hunters that feed on pest mites on the leaves. They are not houseplant pests and are not expected to damage the plant or infest people or pets. Some live products carry allergy or handling warnings, so follow the instructions supplied with the product.
Predatory mites can be a good option for a confirmed spider-mite infestation. Before ordering, check that the predator hunts the mite you found, that your room stays within the temperature and humidity range in the instructions, and that no earlier spray will kill it. Predators work gradually, and the live product needs to arrive in good condition and be released promptly.
Phytoseiulus persimilis is a specialist predator often used when two-spotted spider mites or certain related Tetranychus mites are already active on the plant. It relies heavily on spider mites for food.
Neoseiulus californicus also feeds on spider mites and can use some other food sources. Depending on the product, it may be used earlier in an infestation or in collections where spider mites keep returning.
These are two common examples, not the only beneficial organisms sold for mite control. Check that the product is intended for the mite you found and for use on indoor houseplants.

Before ordering live predators
Check that:
- the predator is sold for the mite you found;
- the product is intended for a few early signs, an established infestation or prevention—whichever matches your plant;
- the temperature and humidity around the plant fit the instructions;
- anything recently used on the plant is safe for the predator;
- the seller ships it to your country and confirms that it is suitable for indoor home use there; and
- someone can receive and release it soon after delivery.
Ask the seller when the product information is unclear. You usually do not need a species name for the first inspection and cleaning. Before release, you do need to know that the predator is sold for the mite on your plant.
Tell the seller about previous sprays
Pesticides, oils and soaps can kill predatory mites directly or leave harmful residue. A leaf that has been rinsed or feels dry may still be unsafe for them.
Tell the seller exactly what you used and when. They can check whether it is compatible with the predator you plan to release.
A nursery or previous owner may have sprayed the plant without telling you. When the treatment history is unknown, continue inspecting the plant and remove visible mites if the leaves tolerate cleaning. Ask the seller for advice or use another treatment method. Waiting or rinsing alone cannot confirm that the residue is safe.
Prepare before the predators arrive
When you plan to clean the plant and release predators, read the product instructions before washing or pruning. Complete those jobs before release only when the instructions or seller recommend that order.
Follow the directions for delivery, storage, placement, quantity, repeat releases and room conditions. Live products are perishable, so have the plant and release area ready before they arrive.
After release, leave the predators and any bran, vermiculite or other material supplied with them in place unless the instructions say otherwise. Avoid washing the plant or adding another treatment without checking that it is safe.
Predatory mites reduce the pest population over time. Old leaf marks will remain, so look for new damage, fresh pest webbing and whether pest mites are becoming harder to find. Predators that rely on spider mites may disappear when the pests become scarce. Species that can eat other food may remain longer.
Common home remedies: what to know
Showering or wiping removes some mites and webbing. Judge the result by what you find during later checks, not by how clean the leaves look immediately afterwards.
Dishwashing detergent is different from a ready-made soap product labelled for plant pests. Homemade mixtures have no single plant-safe strength and may mark or burn leaves.
Neem depends on the product. A ready-made neem product approved for the pest and use has its own label. Raw neem oil and homemade mixtures are not interchangeable with it.
Alcohol and essential-oil mixtures vary in strength and can damage plants. They should not be treated as general houseplant recipes.
Higher humidity can affect some pest and predatory mites, but it will not clear an established infestation. Keep the plant within its normal care range and use a method that directly deals with the mites.
How to tell whether it is working
A treated leaf stays marked. Compare the plant with earlier photos and watch for fresh damage. Treatment time depends on the method, the size of the infestation, the plant and the room conditions.
Take comparison photos
Before cleaning, applying a product or releasing predators, photograph:
- the most damaged area;
- a leaf where the damage ends and clear tissue begins;
- any visible webbing;
- the nearest plants that may have been exposed; and
- any marks that may already have come from a treatment product.
Record the date and what you did. Include the product or predator when you used one. A short phone note is enough.
Recheck the same places
Inspect the original problem area, several nearby leaves and some foliage that was clear at the start. Look beneath the leaves as well as from above. Follow the checks in the product or predator instructions, and inspect sooner whenever you notice a visible change.
Look for:
- fewer pest mites in the same areas;
- no fresh silk after the old webbing was removed;
- damage that has not spread beyond the photographed area;
- leaves that were clear at the start remaining clear;
- healthy new growth while the plant is actively growing; and
- no clear signs of spider mites on the nearest plants.
Old damage can remain after feeding stops
Stippled or bronzed tissue does not return to its original colour. A badly damaged leaf may continue to yellow or drop because its cells were already injured. Old silk and empty shed skins may also remain caught in a fold or around a leaf stalk.
Look for live pest mites, fresh webbing and damage spreading into previously clear tissue. An old leaf may continue to decline after the feeding has stopped.
After predatory mites have been released
A white-paper test is harder to read after a release because beneficial mites may fall from the plant alongside pest mites. Some predators, including adult Phytoseiulus persimilis, can look very active, but speed, colour and movement are not reliable enough to identify them.
Use the identification guide supplied with the predator. Watch mainly for fresh feeding damage, new pest webbing and whether previously clear tissue stays clear. Check the instructions before changing methods, because a moving mite may be one of the predators you released.
The bran, vermiculite or other carrier material may remain visible on the plant. Check the instructions before removing it and ask the seller for help when you cannot tell a predator from a pest mite.
When the problem is not improving
When fresh stippling, new silk or pest mites continue, check four things before changing methods.
- Is the diagnosis still right? Spider mites may not be the only problem. Thrips, scale, another mite or a separate care issue may also be present.
- Did you reach the whole infestation? Check crowded growth, leaf folds, the backs of leaves and nearby plants that may still carry mites.
- Was the product or predator right for the problem? Check that the label names spider mites, allows use on your plant indoors and was followed correctly. For predators, check that the species suits the mite, the room and the size of the problem. Also consider whether an earlier spray could have interfered.
- Could the treatment have marked the plant? Compare new marks with the places where a spray landed and continue looking for live mites.
Spider-mite populations can become resistant to some treatment products. If a correctly chosen product still fails after you have covered the plant as directed and followed the label, do not increase the dose or repeat it early. Follow the label and ask for advice on another approved option.
Work out the likely cause before changing the method. Do not make a stronger homemade mixture, repeat a product sooner than the label allows or pile several treatments together. These can damage the plant and make the source of new marks harder to identify.
When can the plant return to the collection?
Keep the plant separated while you still find fresh feeding, new pest webbing or increasing numbers of pest mites.
Before placing it beside other plants again, check that:
- you have completed the follow-up in the product or predator instructions;
- repeated inspections show no fresh stippling or new pest webbing;
- you are no longer finding live pest mites;
- after a predator release, the mites you still see match the predator guide and no fresh pest damage is appearing;
- you have rechecked the nearest plants and any support or tray that touched the infested foliage; and
- the plant will have enough space for close checks after it returns.
Continue occasional underside checks after the plant rejoins the collection. This can reveal a missed population early, although spider mites can still arrive again on another plant.
Help the plant recover
Once new feeding has stopped, return the plant to the light, watering and temperature it normally needs. Judge recovery by healthy new growth and the absence of new damage; old leaves may remain marked.
Keep useful leaves while they still function
A stippled leaf with plenty of green tissue can still support the plant. Keep it unless it is collapsing, heavily damaged, blocking inspection or holding dense webbing and the plant can afford to lose it.
Use a clean cutting tool and avoid removing most of the foliage from a stressed plant at once.
Return to normal care for that species
Give the plant suitable light, temperature and water. Avoid constantly wet potting mix, severe drought, sudden intense light or a dark isolation corner that does not meet the plant's needs.
Do not try to force recovery with heavy feeding. Fertilise only while the plant is actively growing and according to its normal needs. Extra fertiliser cannot repair damaged cells and may stress the roots.
Repot only when there is another reason
The common spider mites covered here feed mainly on leaves and other growth above the potting mix. Leave the roots alone unless there is a separate problem with drainage, root health or pot size. Mites seen mainly in moist potting mix may belong to another group. Repotting is not a standard spider-mite treatment.
Watch the new growth
Existing marks may remain for the life of the leaf. Stable old damage and new leaves opening without fresh stippling are much better signs of recovery.
Recovery time depends on the plant, the amount of healthy foliage left, whether it is actively growing and the condition of its roots. A fast-growing plant may replace damaged leaves quite quickly. A slow-growing or badly defoliated plant may need much longer.
Protect the rest of the collection
After the immediate problem is under control, keep checking the plants that touched the affected plant, shared its shelf or were difficult to inspect. The aim is to notice a small population before it spreads again.
Keep checking exposed plants and contact points
In a large collection, a short note for each affected plant can help: where it stands, when you first found mites, what you used, what comes next and what you found most recently. Group plants by shelf, cabinet or window so you know which areas have been checked.
During later checks, look again at clips, ties, trellises, moss poles, trays and outer pots that touched infested foliage. Remove fresh silk or trapped leaf material. Apply a product to a support or the potting mix only when the label allows that use.
A cabinet or terrarium links plants through close foliage and shared tools. Inspect every plant inside it. Keep the cabinet or terrarium within the normal range for the plants and within any conditions given for the predator or treatment you are using. Treat each plant according to what you find instead of spraying a homemade mixture through the whole enclosure.
Prevent spread during plant care
Use clean tools and avoid using the same cloth across several plants. Bag removed foliage before carrying it through the room. When possible, care for plants with no signs before working on an infested one, then wash your hands and clean the tools.
New plants and cuttings
Inspect the leaf undersides, the bases of the leaf stalks and any suspicious pale marks before a new plant touches the collection. When possible, keep it apart until you have inspected it more than once and found nothing suspicious. Keep it separate for longer when anything unusual appears.
Place a new arrival where both sides of the leaves are easy to inspect.
A cutting can carry mites or eggs into the propagation area. Deal with the active infestation first and inspect clean new growth before taking routine cuttings. A cutting that looks clean may still carry mites.
When you need to save an irreplaceable plant, keep the cutting away from the rest of the collection and inspect it as carefully as the original plant.
When mites return or removal is reasonable
If mites return: When fresh damage appears again, check the collection from the beginning. A neighbouring plant may have been missed, mites may be hiding in dense growth, the chosen method may not have reached them, or they may have arrived on another plant. Note where you now find live mites and fresh damage, and review everything already used before releasing predators or applying another product.
When removal is reasonable: Discarding a plant can be sensible when webbing and decline cover much of it, the growth is impossible to inspect properly, no suitable treatment is available, isolation prevents proper care or one plant threatens a much larger valuable collection.

Bag the plant before carrying it through the collection. Clean the immediate area and inspect the neighbouring plants. Removing the worst-affected plant reduces the number of mites in the collection, although some may already be elsewhere.
Common spider-mite questions
Are spider mites harmful to people or pets?
Spider mites feed on plants and do not live as parasites on people or pets. Sprays and other treatments may have their own safety rules, so follow the label for people, animals, food, aquariums, treated rooms and when it is safe to use the room again.
What does “red spider mite” mean?
The name is used loosely for several mites and for red or orange colour forms. It is not a reliable species name. Spider mites can look pale, greenish, orange, brown or red, and their colour can change with age and conditions.
