Anthurium plowmanii

A bird’s-nest Anthurium shaped by seasonal dryness

Anthurium plowmanii ranges from northern Peru and Bolivia through western Brazil to Paraguay. Unlike many collector Anthuriums, it grows in seasonally dry tropical forest as an epiphyte or lithophyte, with records from about 50–900 m and also from Amazonian várzea and terra-firme habitats. Its rosette persists through pronounced dry periods and often occupies exposed rocks or trees.

Care for Anthurium plowmanii

• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light, including gentle early or late sun after acclimation. Keep the rosette away from hot midday glass.
• Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the upper 3–4 cm to dry. Empty both the outer pot and the central crown after watering.
• Humidity and airflow: A range of 50–70% relative humidity suits this robust rosette when air circulates between the leaves.
• Temperature: Keep at 20–30 °C and above 17 °C at night. These seasonally drier habitat types handle warmth when roots remain aerated.
• Substrate and repotting: Before changing the substrate around Anthurium plowmanii, learn the nursery pot’s wet and dry weights and confirm active growth through the rosette crown and outer roots; that evidence gives a safer repotting point than a fixed calendar date. Later, use a stable close-fitting pot with coarse bark, coco chips, pumice and a modest amount of coir.
• Feeding: Use a dilute complete fertiliser while leaves and roots are growing. If Anthurium plowmanii keeps producing roots or leaves under lower light, continue feeding lightly; reduce or pause when growth stops, and rinse the mix with plain water every 4–6 weeks.
• Ruffled rosette and propagation: Clear debris and water from the ruffled central rosette and give the spreading leaves generous space. Separate only basal offsets that already carry their own roots.

Yellowing, brown tips and pests

• Sorting thirst from root stress: Check below the dry upper 3–4 cm before watering. A pot that lifts easily with dry deeper mix and folding ruffled leaves needs a full soak; yellow limp leaves above a persistently heavy pot call for a root inspection.
• Firm tissue during root recovery: Firm roots should sit below a crown that remains dry and visible. Remove soft or hollow roots with clean sterilised scissors, return the plant to a stable coarse mix and preserve the upper-layer drying interval. Before cutting Anthurium plowmanii, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Tip damage after irregular watering: Brown tips can come from an overlong dry period or fertiliser salts. Check deeper moisture, water thoroughly when due and flush the root ball; let the upper mix dry again afterwards.
• Spot movement and leaf-surface moisture: Dry bleached areas point to sun, while soft marks at leaf bases can come from trapped crown water. Isolate spreading or yellow-edged lesions, keep the crown dry and document the edge daily.
• Slow growth after a root setback: Weak light and a pot that never reaches its dry interval can stall the broad ruffled centre. Give medium to bright filtered light, 20–30 °C and open side space, then wait for fresh root activity before adding more feed.
• Pest checks around active growth: Thrips shelter in the emerging folds; mealybugs and scale can sit beyond view in the deep ruffled centre. Isolate, clear visible insects with a damp swab and apply a labelled treatment to accessible leaf bases. Follow the label interval and inspect the centre every week for a month.
• Water and debris in the centre: Water and debris can remain deep in the ruffled centre. Clear the crown after watering, keep the growth point dry and retain the plant’s upper-substrate drying interval.

Anthurium plowmanii: safety around pets

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium plowmanii

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Plowmanii honours the American ethnobotanist Timothy Plowman. Thomas B. Croat described Anthurium plowmanii in 1987 in Candollea 42: 811.
