Anthurium kunayalense

Deep shade in Panama’s wet forest

Anthurium kunayalense is endemic to Panama, including Guna Yala and neighbouring parts of Panamá Province. It grows as a compact understory plant in wet tropical forest, where deep shade, high humidity and dense surrounding vegetation shape its broad textured leaves. Published elevation detail is limited, so the strongest habitat picture comes from its Panamanian wet-forest distribution and sheltered understory position.

Care for Anthurium kunayalense

• Light: Give bright shade or filtered light with protection from intense midday sun. Keep the plant in one stable position while a new leaf develops.
• Watering: Keep the root zone consistently moist and water when the surface just begins to dry. Full drainage after each watering keeps warm roots aerated.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 65–80% relative humidity with gentle continuous airflow. Warm, still, saturated air encourages damage around the crown.
• Temperature: Maintain 22–30 °C with nights above 20 °C. Cold roots and sudden drops quickly interrupt lowland growth.
• Substrate and repotting: Use the nursery root ball as a stable baseline for Anthurium kunayalense while it acclimates; record how quickly the fine-rooted velvet-leaf root ball dries, then repot when fresh roots and a repeatable watering interval are visible. Repot later into a pot 2–3 cm wider using fine bark, coco chips, coir and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Use a dilute complete fertiliser while warm conditions support growth. Reduce the strength if growth slows and flush the pot with plain water every 4–6 weeks.
• Warm wet-forest growth and propagation: Keep the expanding foliage in stable warm humidity and dry water from the crown promptly. Propagate from rooted offsets or node-bearing stem sections after establishment.

Yellow leaves, dark spots and pests

• When leaves yellow or lose firmness: A container that feels much lighter than usual and dry surface indicate thirst; soak all of the mix and empty any collected runoff. A container holding moisture for too long, damp mix and yellow soft leaves indicate root stress. Cold roots can also cause wilting while the substrate is still moist.
• Root health after prolonged moisture: Healthy lowland roots are firm and active in a warm aerated mix. Remove slippery or hollow roots using a blade cleaned before every cut, use a snug ventilated pot and keep the root zone above 20 °C during recovery. Before cutting Anthurium kunayalense, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Crisping at the tip and margin: Brown tips may record a missed watering, salts or dry heat. Check pot weight, restore consistent moisture and flush with low-mineral water; keep warm airflow gentle around thin or expanding leaves.
• An isolated spot with a growing border: Dry scorch may keep the original shape, while a wet or yellow-edged spot can expand quickly in warm humid conditions. Isolate immediately, keep leaves dry and photograph the edge each day.
• A quiet crown in useful light: Cold roots, sudden temperature drops and weak light quickly interrupt lowland growth. Maintain bright shade, 22–30 °C and nights above 20 °C; inspect roots before adding fertiliser to a stalled plant.
• New-growth damage from pests: Thrips attack new leaves; mealybugs and scale hide at petiole bases, nodes and the crown. Isolate, remove visible pests, apply an approved pest treatment through the hidden growth, repeat only at the interval given on the label and inspect new growth every seven days for four weeks.
• Cold-stalled new leaves: A cold root zone can stop an opening leaf even when humidity is high. Restore nights above 20 °C, keep the root zone aerated and leave the soft blade untouched.

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium kunayalense

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Kunayalense means “from Kuna Yala”, the autonomous region of Panama. Thomas B. Croat and Vannini described Anthurium kunayalense in 2010 in Aroideana 33: 162.
