Anthurium ivanportillae

From Ecuador’s Cordillera del Cóndor

Anthurium ivanportillae is an Ecuadorian wet-forest species formally published in 2021. The type material traces to Zamora-Chinchipe near the Cordillera del Cóndor at roughly 765–862 m, where the original plant was collected in mature forest. Its known background is a warm, humid eastern Andean slope with dense cover and regular rainfall.

Care for Anthurium ivanportillae

• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light. Strong midday sun can mark the raised leaf surface and overheat the root zone.
• Watering: Keep moisture even, watering when the top 1–2 cm begins to dry. Drain fully while a new textured leaf is opening.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 70–85% relative humidity with gentle airflow over the recessed veins and crown.
• Temperature: Maintain 21–28 °C with nights above 19 °C. Stable warmth supports clean expansion of thick, bullate leaves.
• Substrate and repotting: Keep the nursery planting of Anthurium ivanportillae stable while light, temperature and watering settle, and follow the root ball and emerging foliage for signs of activity; repot when the plant is growing and its drying rate is familiar. Repot later into a snug pot with fine bark, coir, coco chips and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Use a weak complete fertiliser during root and leaf growth. Flush with plain water every 4–6 weeks to protect the fine active roots from salts.
• Corrugated leaves and propagation: Rinse the corrugated blades gently so dust does not collect between the raised veins, then dry them with airflow. Propagate from rooted offsets or a stem section carrying a live node.

Wilting, damaged roots and mites in leaf grooves

• Reading a wilted or yellow leaf: A light-feeling root ball with a dry upper root zone and flexible leaf indicates thirst; water until the mix is evenly moist and let excess escape. A pot that feels heavy in the hand with damp mix, yellow soft growth or a sour smell indicates root failure; give the pot time to lighten and inspect the roots and exposed stem.
• Root damage below the surface: Healthy tissue holds its shape at both roots and stem; texture decides what stays. Trim only slippery, hollow or blackened roots with a sharp blade sterilised in advance, then use a snug aerated pot and keep the short stem at the surface. Before cutting Anthurium ivanportillae, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• A crisp point or widening brown edge: Crisp margins can be caused by a missed watering or salts concentrated during drying. Check pot weight, restore an even watering rhythm and flush with low-mineral water; if the pot stays moist and edges worsen, check the roots next.
• Contact marks and expanding tissue damage: Deep leaf grooves can retain water after cleaning; dry the full surface after rinsing. Check the deepest hollows before returning the plant to its place. Separate the plant if a yellow-edged mark grows across the leaf; keep the blade dry and photograph its edge.
• A delayed leaf or inactive root tip: Weak light often reduces the speed and size of the next leaf; fix the light, temperature or root problem you found before feeding again. Use steady filtered light and warm roots within 21–28 °C; look for a fresh root or movement at the crown.
• Pests concealed around the crown: Black specks beside silver new-leaf scars suggest thrips; mites create finer pale dots between the raised veins. Examine closely recesses, undersides and the central growth point with magnification. Isolate, rinse hardened foliage, treat with a product carrying the correct pest label, follow the label closely when another application is due and inspect both leaf surfaces once a week for the next month.
• Water and mites in leaf grooves: Dust, mites and water collect between the raised veins. Rinse a hardened leaf gently, dry the grooves with airflow and inspect recesses when new growth emerges distorted.

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium ivanportillae

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Ivanportillae honours Ecuadorian plant collector and grower Ivan Portilla, who collected and cultivated the species near El Pangui. Thomas B. Croat described Anthurium ivanportillae in 2021 in Aroideana 44(2): 141.
