Anthurium debile

A lowland plant of Colombia’s pluvial forest

Anthurium debile is known from Valle del Cauca in western Colombia. It grows in very wet lowland tropical forest, including riparian sites near the Bajo Calima region, and has been recorded as an epiphyte. The habitat is warm, deeply humid and frequently wet, with roots surrounded by air, litter and moving water rather than dense stagnant soil.

Care for Anthurium debile

• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light. Strong midday sun can mark the raised leaf surface and overheat the root zone.
• Watering: Keep moisture even, watering when the top 1–2 cm begins to dry. Drain fully while a new textured leaf is opening.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 70–85% relative humidity with gentle airflow over the recessed veins and crown.
• Temperature: Maintain 21–28 °C with nights above 19 °C. Stable warmth supports clean expansion of thick, bullate leaves.
• Substrate and repotting: For the first growth cycle, leave Anthurium debile at its current planting depth and monitor how the airy epiphytic root zone responds between thorough waterings; repot once the root system is active and handling stress is lower. Repot later into a snug pot with fine bark, coir, coco chips and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Use a weak complete fertiliser during root and leaf growth. Flush with plain water every 4–6 weeks to protect the fine active roots from salts.
• Bullate foliage and propagation: Clean the undulating leaf surface with a gentle rinse and dry water from the depressions promptly. Use independently rooted offsets or a node-bearing stem section for propagation.

Yellowing, root problems and water in leaf hollows

• Leaf softness, colour and pot weight: A light-feeling root ball with a dry upper root zone and flexible leaf indicates thirst; water until the mix is evenly moist and let excess escape. A pot that feels heavy in the hand with damp mix, yellow soft growth or a sour smell indicates root failure; give the pot time to lighten and inspect the roots and exposed stem.
• Root decline and repotting decisions: A solid stem at the surface and firm roots can remain; texture decides what stays. Trim only slippery, hollow or blackened roots with a sharp blade sterilised in advance, then use a snug aerated pot and keep the short stem at the surface. Before cutting Anthurium debile, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Leaf-edge damage from drying or salts: Crisp margins can be caused by a missed watering or salts concentrated during drying. Check pot weight, restore an even watering rhythm and flush with low-mineral water; if the pot stays moist and edges worsen, check the roots next.
• Dry surface marks and wet spots: Droplets held between raised veins often leave a fixed outline; dry the full surface after rinsing. Blot visible droplets and let air move through the recesses. An enlarging damp spot needs isolation as soon as its border advances; keep the blade dry and photograph its edge.
• The next leaf remains small or delayed: Cool roots may hold a textured leaf at the growth point; fix the light, temperature or root problem you found before feeding again. Return the plant to filtered light with a stable 21–28 °C range; look for a fresh root or movement at the crown.
• Pest activity around emerging leaves: Thrips damage is easiest to see once a distorted leaf opens; mites create finer pale dots between the raised veins. Examine closely recesses, undersides and the central growth point with magnification. Isolate, rinse hardened foliage, treat with a product carrying the correct pest label, follow the label closely when another application is due and check the whole plant at seven-day intervals for a full month.
• Water and mites in leaf hollows: Water and mites can remain in the leaf depressions. Rinse hardened foliage gently, dry every hollow and keep the short stem in a close-fitting pot. Choose a wider container only after observed horizontal stem growth.

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium debile

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Debile is Latin for “weak”, “slender”, or “delicate”. Thomas B. Croat and Dorothy C. Bay described Anthurium debile in 2004 in Aroideana 27: 97.
