Dryopteris erythrosora, commonly known as the autumn fern, is a clump-forming, shade-loving fern prized for its colorful young fronds. New growth emerges in shades of copper, rose, or bronze before maturing into rich green. Its soft, feathery texture and arching form make it a beautiful accent in indoor shaded areas, terrariums, or humid rooms like bathrooms. Naturally suited to low light and cooler temperatures, it’s a perfect match for fern enthusiasts or anyone seeking a pet-safe indoor plant.
This species is native to East Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea, where it grows on forest floors beneath dense tree cover. It thrives in moist, humus-rich soils and consistently shaded conditions, with ambient temperatures between 15 – 24 °C and high humidity year-round. These natural conditions make it well suited for indoor cultivation in homes with moderate humidity and filtered light.
Dryopteris erythrosora is semi-evergreen when grown outdoors in temperate regions. Indoors, it remains green year-round with the right light and moisture. Mimicking its native woodland habitat – shade, moisture, and airflow – will reward you with vigorous growth and stunning seasonal color changes.
The genus name Dryopteris combines the Greek words drys (oak) and pteris (fern), referring to its common occurrence in oak forests. The species name erythrosora comes from erythros (red) and sora (heap), pointing to its reddish sori – spore clusters found on mature fronds. Initially described by botanist D.C. Eaton, it was formally reclassified by Otto Kuntze in 1891.
Ready to bring natural woodland beauty into your home? Order Dryopteris erythrosora now and enjoy its unique color changes and low-maintenance charm all year round.
