Syngonium erythrophyllum 'Red Arrow' stands out with bold, moody foliage and a rich burgundy underside that gives it a unique edge. The upper leaf surface is a deep, velvety green – almost black in lower light – while the reverse side glows in dark red, especially when backlit. Each arrowhead-shaped leaf is held on fine, trailing or climbing stems that develop quickly with support.
This compact, fast-growing cultivar thrives in bright, indirect light, forming a sleek silhouette as it climbs or trails. Its dramatic coloring makes it ideal for darker pots or grouped with lighter foliage for maximum contrast. 'Red Arrow' is one of the few Syngonium that bring deep tones into the mix without sacrificing ease of care.
Syngonium erythrophyllum Birdsey ex G.S.Bunting was first published in Baileya 14: 17 (1966). It is native to Panama and neighboring regions of Central America, where it grows along the forest floor and climbs toward filtered light. In its natural habitat, it thrives in warm, humid environments between 22 – 30 °C and roots readily at nodes along its stem.
As a houseplant, 'Red Arrow' stays compact and manageable. It reaches 40 – 70 cm in height when supported and spreads just as wide. Its bold underside color is genetically stable and doesn’t fade over time. Like all Syngonium species, it is toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to calcium oxalates.
Unlike some Syngonium cultivars, 'Red Arrow' holds its deep red tones even in moderate light – though brighter indirect light enhances the contrast. It thrives on moss poles or wooden planks but also trails beautifully from hanging pots. Its natural forest-floor origins provide clear cues: steady warmth, consistent moisture, and gentle light.
The genus Syngonium derives from Greek, referring to the joined reproductive parts in the flower structure. The species name erythrophyllum means “red leaf” – directly describing the vibrant underside. 'Red Arrow' is a cultivated selection valued for its compact growth and high visual contrast.
