Peperomia caperata 'Moonlight' is a striking cultivar bred by Obed Jacob Smit for the Eden Collection. Introduced in 2014, it originated from a cross between two unnamed P. caperata cultivars. With its shimmering silver leaves and compact size, 'Moonlight' adds a modern, metallic accent to any plant display.
This cultivar forms a low mound of short stems, rarely exceeding 12 – 15 cm in height. The heart-shaped leaves are deeply ridged, with a silvery sheen across the surface and subtle green venation. The undersides remain plain green, emphasizing the luminous upper surface. Small, greenish flower spikes may appear, though the foliage is the true highlight.
'Moonlight' was created by Dutch breeder Obed Jacob Smit through controlled pollination of two unnamed Peperomia caperata cultivars. Marketed by the Eden Collection, it quickly became popular for its unique metallic look and compact, adaptable growth.
Overwatering is the main risk, leading to root and stem rot. Very low light reduces the metallic shine, while direct sun can scorch the delicate leaf surface. Wrinkled leaves usually signal underwatering.
Compact and slow-growing, 'Moonlight' is well suited for tabletops, shelves, or terrariums. Its silvery foliage contrasts beautifully with darker plants. Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing older leaves.
The genus name Peperomia was coined in 1794 by Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón Jiménez after their expeditions in Peru and Chile. It derives from Greek peperi (“pepper”) and homoios (“resembling”), reflecting the plant’s relation to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The epithet caperata means “wrinkled,” describing the textured leaf surface.
With its metallic silver foliage and easy-care nature, Peperomia caperata 'Moonlight' is a unique, compact cultivar that brightens any plant display. Order now to add this shimmering gem to your collection.
