Hoya latifolia âSilverâ brings together bold foliage and slow-growing charm. Native to the humid forests of Borneo, this cultivar is best known for its broad, leathery leaves marbled with muted silver splash. The thick foliage can reach up to 25âŻcm long and has strong central veins that shimmer under indirect light. Whether left to trail freely or trained to climb, its striking appearance speaks for itself without trying too hard.
Hoya latifolia is naturally found in lowland rainforests of Borneo, especially in Sarawak. As a climbing epiphyte, it grows attached to trees in bright shade, with year-round warmth and high humidity. Temperatures in its habitat range between 22 â 30âŻÂ°C with frequent rainfall. Indoors, it remains compact in early years but twines steadily when given something to cling to. This plant has a perennial life cycle and may live for many years in stable conditions.
Note: This cultivar is not pet-safe â like other Hoyas, it contains latex sap that can cause irritation if ingested or touched.
When mature, Hoya latifolia âSilverâ produces star-shaped umbels of creamy-white to pale green flowers, sometimes scented. Blooms appear on persistent peduncles, so never trim these off. While it may take years to flower indoors, it rewards patience. This plant will trail beautifully from a shelf, but if you want vertical growth, offer a moss pole or wire frame.
Understanding where your Hoya comes from and how it grows in nature helps you recreate the right indoor conditions. Mimicking its native epiphytic environment will encourage stronger growth and long-term success.
The genus name Hoya honors botanist Thomas Hoy, gardener to the Duke of Northumberland. The species name latifolia is Latin for âbroad-leavedâ â referring to the plantâs signature wide foliage. Hoya latifolia was originally described by George Don in the early 19th century. The âSilverâ label is an informal cultivar name used in trade to refer to its unique marbled foliage.
