Hoya carnosa 'Flamingo Dream' is a visually striking nursery form of the timeless Hoya carnosa, also known as the wax plant. Its thick, fleshy leaves blend deep green with vibrant pink variegation, creating high contrast that's both sculptural and soft. The vines can climb or trail, making this an adaptable showpiece for plant shelves, hanging pots, or trellised walls.
Hoya carnosa (L.f.) R.Br., described in 1810, is native to subtropical forests across southern China, India, and Southeast Asia. It grows epiphytically or lithophytically up to 1200 m elevation, often along forest edges with bright, dappled light. 'Flamingo Dream' is a modern nursery selection â not a registered cultivar â chosen for its rare pink variegation and indoor adaptability.
Yes â like all Hoya carnosa forms, 'Flamingo Dream' can bloom when mature and well-established. Expect star-shaped, fragrant flowers in pale pink with darker coronas. Flowering typically occurs after 2 â 3 years under bright light. Do not cut old peduncles â they rebloom from the same site.
Take a 10 â 15 cm stem cutting just below a node. Root in water or a well-draining substrate. Place in bright, warm, humid conditions. Roots usually appear within 2 â 4 weeks.
Hoya carnosa is considered non-toxic to pets and humans. However, ingestion can cause mild irritation, so itâs best to keep it out of reach of pets and children.
The genus Hoya honors 18th-century English botanist Thomas Hoy. The species name carnosa means âfleshy,â describing the thick, succulent-like leaves. The name âFlamingo Dreamâ reflects the cultivarâs unusual pink foliage â not typical of the species and highly prized by collectors.
