Gynura aurantiaca, commonly known as Velvetplant or purple velvet plant, is a tropical trailing perennial prized for its velvety leaves covered in deep purple trichomes. Native to the humid understories of Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, this fast-growing member of the Asteraceae family adds dramatic texture to any bright indoor space. Its initially upright stems quickly become trailing and slightly woody, making it ideal for hanging baskets or high shelves. While it occasionally produces small orange flowers with a pungent scent, most growers prune them early to preserve the striking foliage.
This species grows in tropical lowland forests where it climbs or trails along the forest floor or surrounding vegetation. It thrives under high humidity, filtered light, and warm temperatures with year-round rainfall. Mimicking this in cultivation ensures compact, richly colored growth and reduces legginess.
Velvetplant is not listed as toxic by major authorities, but its hairy leaves may cause mild irritation if chewed or touched repeatedly. It’s best to keep it out of reach of curious pets or small children to avoid accidental contact.
Add vivid purple texture to your indoor plant collection with Gynura aurantiaca. Fast-growing, easy to propagate, and visually unique, this velvet-leaved showstopper brings a tropical touch to shelves, baskets, and semi-hydro setups. Order today and enjoy the bold beauty of Velvetplant in your own space.
