Euphorbia abyssinica var. erythraeae is a slow-growing succulent shrub or small tree native to the Horn of Africa, particularly Eritrea and Ethiopia. Known for its upright, sculptural stems and deep ridges edged with paired spines, it offers an architectural look with minimal care. Its smooth, dark green columns develop a distinctive waxy coating that helps reduce moisture loss – ideal for dry interiors or xeric planting schemes. When grown indoors, it remains compact and manageable, maturing slowly over time.
This variety is native to rocky hillsides and dry scrub zones in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, often found at elevations between 800 and 2,000 meters. It thrives in well-drained, mineral-rich soils and full sun, adapting to extended dry periods with ease.
Like all Euphorbia species, this plant produces a white latex sap that is toxic and may cause skin and eye irritation. Wear gloves when handling or pruning, and keep away from pets and children.
Bring home this rare, drought-tolerant succulent with bold structure and minimal maintenance needs. Order now and add a living sculpture to your space.
Your new plant has just travelled a long way and needs a calm start in its new home. For step-by-step unboxing and first-week care, check our after-delivery care guide. For deeper tips on how your plant settles in over the next weeks, read our houseplant acclimatization guide.
