Echinopsis lageniformis f. monstruosa cristata is one of the most bizarre and sculptural cactus forms in cultivation. Known in the collector trade as the “Crested Penis Cactus,” it represents the crested mutation of the already monstrous form of Echinopsis lageniformis (syn. Trichocereus bridgesii). Its glaucous-green tissue twists into upright, fan-shaped crests that resemble abstract sculpture, with monstrous and crested growth often appearing on the same plant. Compact but ever-changing, this cactus develops intricate shapes that make every specimen a one-of-a-kind living artwork.
The parent species, Echinopsis lageniformis, is native to Bolivia, where it grows as a tall, columnar cactus on rocky slopes and valleys. The monstrous and crested forms, however, are horticultural selections that do not occur naturally. These growth anomalies arise from mutations that alter normal stem development, resulting in fan-shaped ridges and contorted forms that fascinate collectors worldwide.
Every specimen of Echinopsis lageniformis f. monstruosa cristata is unique, combining monstrous tissue with crested ridges in ever-changing configurations. Its unusual silhouette makes it a talking point in any serious cactus collection. More than a plant, it’s a living sculpture that evolves over decades, rewarding growers with shapes no two individuals ever share.
The genus name Echinopsis derives from the Greek echinos (hedgehog or sea urchin) and opsis (appearance), a reference to the dense spination typical of the genus. The term lageniformis means “flask-shaped,” describing the original species’ columnar form, while cristata refers to the crested growth habit.
If you want a cactus that challenges the line between plant and sculpture, Echinopsis lageniformis f. monstruosa cristata is a must-have. Its ghostly, twisted forms and unpredictable growth patterns make it a true collector’s specimen. Order today and secure one of the most unusual cactus cultivars in existence.
