Dracaena trifasciata 'Metallica', also known as "Siam Silver" or "Tenzan", is a rare cultivar recognized for its metallic silver foliage and structured, upright form. With its sword-shaped leaves, subtle gray-green variegation, and reddish wavy margins, it adds a modern, sculptural touch to any interior. Originally classified under Sansevieria, this cultivar now belongs to the Dracaena genus and retains all the low-maintenance traits that make these plants a favorite for busy homes and offices.
This slow-growing plant is ideal for both beginners and collectors seeking a standout yet undemanding plant. It tolerates irregular watering, low humidity, and a wide range of lighting conditions.
Origin: Native to dry, rocky grasslands of West Africa, especially Nigeria. Adapted to thrive in arid climates with minimal rainfall.
Height: Typically 60 â 90 cm indoors, depending on container and light exposure.
Growth pattern: Slow-growing with upright, unbranched leaf formation emerging from rhizomes.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested â keep out of reach of pets and small children.
Performs best in bright, indirect light but handles low-light conditions well. Avoid sudden exposure to harsh sun, which can bleach or scorch the foliage. Gradual acclimation is key for brighter spots.
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Use pots with drainage holes and never let the roots sit in water. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
Standard indoor humidity is sufficient. Dracaena 'Metallica' tolerates dry air and doesnât need misting. Maintain temperatures between 18 â 29°C. Protect from cold drafts or surfaces below 10°C.
Use a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or sand. Terracotta pots are a good choice to allow for natural evaporation and moisture control.
Feed monthly during active growth with a diluted liquid fertilizer. Do not fertilize during low-light periods or when the plant is not actively growing.
Repot every 2 â 3 years or once roots fill the container. Choose a pot that allows drainage and is only slightly larger than the root ball.
Can be propagated by division of rhizomes or leaf cuttings. Note that variegation or metallic tone may not always carry over through leaf propagation.
Performs well in semi-hydro systems using LECA. Flush monthly to prevent mineral buildup and ensure roots are never fully submerged.
Prune off yellow or damaged leaves at the base with sterile scissors to maintain appearance. Rotate the plant regularly for balanced growth.
Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Treat infestations early with neem oil or natural insecticidal soap.
Occurs if the plant is kept in soggy soil. Use fast-draining substrate and water only when completely dry.
Yellowing: Usually from overwatering or lack of light.Browning tips: Often due to inconsistent watering, excessive fertilizer, or fluoride in tap water.Curling: Linked to cold drafts or dehydration â adjust placement and watering.
Rare, but may occur in overly wet, stagnant conditions. Improve airflow, avoid overwatering, and use a fungicide if necessary.
Can signal underwatering, low light, or cold exposure. Address all environmental factors promptly.
Genus: Dracaena comes from Greek "drakaina", meaning âfemale dragonâ, referencing the red resin in some species.
Species: trifasciata means "three-banded", referring to the leaf striping of the original species.
Cultivar: âMetallicaâ highlights the distinctive silver-metallic leaf surface. Originally described as a form of Sansevieria, reclassified by Mabberley in 2017.
Bring sculptural elegance and low-maintenance charm into your home with Dracaena 'Metallica'. Order now and elevate your space with this rare metallic beauty.
