Family: Cyperaceae Cyperus alternifolius ‘Zumula’ is a compact cultivar of umbrella papyrus (Cyperus alternifolius L., published in Mant. Pl. 1: 28, 1767). Unlike the tall wetland form, this variant was bred for indoor use – softer, shorter, and fully safe for pets. Marketed as “cat grass,” it produces tender green shoots that cats and dogs can nibble freely. With its neat, umbrella-shaped tufts and fast regrowth, it’s both a decorative accent and a functional pet-friendly plant.
Cyperus alternifolius originates from Madagascar, where it grows along wetlands and river margins. ‘Zumula’ was selected as a compact, pot-adapted cultivar with flexible stems and a softer texture. Unlike short-lived cereal-based cat grasses, this sedge is perennial, regenerating continuously rather than dying back after one cutting. It’s a sustainable, long-term alternative for multi-pet homes and urban spaces alike.
‘Zumula’ is both practical and decorative – a living pet accessory that adds color and softness indoors. Its bright green stems contrast beautifully with white or terracotta pots, fitting clean, minimalist interiors as well as playful setups. Because it regrows quickly after trimming, it’s an eco-friendly alternative to disposable cat-grass trays and stays fresh for months rather than days.
The genus name Cyperus comes from the Greek “kypeiros,” meaning sedge. The species epithet alternifolius refers to the alternating, umbrella-like whorls of leaf-like bracts. The trade name ‘Zumula’ emphasizes its soft, pet-safe foliage and compact stature compared to standard umbrella papyrus.
Order Cyperus alternifolius ‘Zumula’ today and give your pets a safe, evergreen treat that keeps growing. Compact, fast-regenerating, and beautifully fresh, this pet-safe umbrella papyrus adds a touch of life to any room while keeping cats and dogs healthy and entertained.
