Begonia U062 is an unregistered rhizomatous hybrid known for its mesmerizing spiral foliage and shimmering surface. The leaves are asymmetrical with a dramatic twist at the base, forming a natural swirl pattern often referred to as an "escargot" shape. The coloration is complex – a blend of silver, dark green, bronze, and near-black, shifting subtly with the light. Fine hairs give the foliage a soft shimmer, while deep venation adds structure and depth.
This Begonia remains compact and sculptural, growing from a thickened rhizome that hugs the soil surface. It’s a collector’s favorite for terrariums, cabinets, and shaded displays, offering texture and intensity in a small footprint.
Begonia U062 is a cultivated rhizomatous hybrid, likely descended from Southeast Asian or South American species adapted to shaded understories with high humidity and mild temperatures. It grows close to the soil from horizontal rhizomes and does not climb or trail. Temperatures between 18 – 24 °C and moisture-retentive, airy soil replicate its natural preferences indoors.
This hybrid is grown strictly for its ornamental foliage and does not produce prominent flowers. Like most Begonias, it is toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to soluble calcium oxalates.
Begonia U062 thrives with consistency and protection from extremes. Its rhizomatous structure stores moisture, but the leaves are sensitive to both direct sun and wetness. Use shallow pots with wide surface area to accommodate horizontal growth. Replicating its natural low-light, high-humidity forest floor environment gives this hybrid everything it needs to develop strong, colorful foliage with minimal stress.
This plant is listed under the U-series hybrid codes by collectors and growers – U062 is a code-name, not a formally registered cultivar. It’s believed to be a complex hybrid of rhizomatous Begonias selected for spiral shape and iridescent coloring. The genus Begonia was named by Charles Plumier in the 17th century in honor of Michel Bégon, a French patron of botany.
