Trachycarpus fortunei, also called the Chinese windmill palm, is a cold-tolerant fan palm that brings bold, architectural flair to indoor rooms, sheltered terraces, and gardens in cooler zones. With its rugged trunk wrapped in natural fibers and striking green fronds, this low-maintenance palm adapts well to pots and performs surprisingly well in temperate regions where other palms would fail. Whether you’re looking for a winter-hardy statement piece or a tropical touch that doesn’t demand a greenhouse, Trachycarpus fortunei delivers.
Trachycarpus fortunei (Hook.) H.Wendl. is the accepted scientific name for this species, first published in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France 8: 429 (1861). It was originally described as Chamaerops fortunei by William Jackson Hooker – this earlier name is considered the basionym.
The genus name Trachycarpus comes from the Greek words trachys (τραχύς), meaning "rough," and karpos (καρπός), meaning "fruit" – a reference to the coarse texture of its seed surface. The species epithet fortunei honors Scottish botanist Robert Fortune, who introduced the plant to Europe in the mid-19th century during his expeditions in China.
Get the bold look of a tropical palm without the heat. Order Trachycarpus fortunei today and enjoy a hardy, low-maintenance centerpiece that thrives where other palms won’t.
