Orchid Potting Mix

Use Orchid Mix when bark has broken down, roots look cramped or pots stay wet much longer than they used to.

• When to repot: repot every few years or when bark becomes soft and compacted, even if the plant has not outgrown its pot.
• Remove old substrate: gently ease the orchid from its pot and remove as much old material as possible without snapping healthy roots.
• Rinse and trim: rinse roots under lukewarm water to wash away remaining pieces, then cut dead or mushy roots with sterilised scissors.
• Prepare the pot: choose a pot with generous drainage and add a base layer of Orchid Mix to support the root system.
• Position the orchid: spread roots over the base layer and gradually backfill with mix, keeping the plant stable while leaving spaces between particles.
• Settle the mix: tap the pot rather than compressing the substrate so it stays loose and airy.
• First watering: water lightly after repotting so the mix settles; avoid drowning freshly trimmed roots in heavy, prolonged moisture.
• Ongoing watering: water thoroughly when roots look silvery or the mix feels dry, and allow it to drain fully before returning the pot to a cover or cachepot.

• Water retention capacity: around 30 %, tuned for brief wetting and relatively quick drying.
• Structural stability: typically 2–3 years before bark and sphagnum break down enough to affect drainage noticeably.
• Bioactive? Not specifically designed as a bioactive substrate, but compatible with many terrarium-style setups when ventilation is adequate.
• Pet-safe? No – contains perlite, fertiliser and activated carbon and is not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
