Orchid Mix – Airy, fast-draining substrate for epiphytic orchids
Orchid Mix is a light, fast-draining and humidity-retaining substrate for epiphytic orchids. It is built for roots that naturally cling to bark and branches, providing plenty of air while still holding enough moisture between waterings.
Why Orchid Mix suits epiphytic orchids
- Very high aeration: coarse particles keep air moving freely around sensitive orchid roots.
- Fast drainage: water runs through quickly instead of pooling in the pot.
- Controlled moisture retention: sphagnum moss holds a thin film of water on particle surfaces.
- Root support: bark and husk chips give roots something to grip and stabilise the plant.
Orchid habitat translated into a pot
Many orchids grow attached to trees in tropical forests rather than in dense soil. Rainwater wets roots briefly and then drains away. Orchid Mix mimics those conditions in a pot: large particles, high airflow and moderate moisture that does not linger around roots for days.
Water behaviour in Orchid Mix
The mix is designed to wet quickly and dry relatively fast. Water thoroughly, let excess drain away and wait until the mix feels only slightly damp before watering again. Constantly soggy bark invites rot; short drying phases between waterings are usually safer.
Which orchids are a good match
This substrate works well for many epiphytic orchids such as Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium and Cattleya. Species that prefer constant, heavy moisture or true terrestrial orchids usually need a finer, more water-retentive medium.
