Ficus Soil Mix

Ficus respond well to repotting when it is done cleanly and combined with sensible watering in this mix.

• When to repot: repot when roots circle the pot, when the plant becomes unstable, or when old soil stays wet for a long time and no longer drains well.
• Prepare the plant: gently loosen the plant from its pot and remove as much of the old substrate as you can without tearing healthy roots.
• Rinse and trim: rinse roots under lukewarm water to clear debris, then cut away dead or rotten roots with sterilised scissors.
• Set up the pot: choose a pot with drainage holes, add a thin base layer of Ficus Soil Mix and position the plant so the root crown sits just below the rim.
• Backfill carefully: spread the roots out and gradually fill the sides with mix, lightly pressing to stabilise the plant without compacting the substrate.
• First watering: water thoroughly so the soil settles around the roots, then let the top layer dry before the next watering.
• Ongoing care: keep Ficus in bright, indirect light and avoid cold draughts. Check moisture with a finger in the top few centimetres rather than watering on a fixed schedule.

Consistent watering and a stable environment usually make more difference to Ficus health than frequent repotting; in this mix the structure normally stays usable for several years.
