Expanded Clay Pebbles – Hydroponic medium and drainage booster
Expanded clay pebbles are round, kiln-fired clay granules used in hydroponic systems, semi-hydro setups and as a drainage aid in soil. Their porous core stores water, while the smooth outer surface and gaps between pebbles keep plenty of air around roots.
Why expanded clay pebbles work so well
- Enhanced aeration: the gaps between pebbles keep oxygen flowing to roots.
- Improved drainage: water moves quickly through the layer, reducing the risk of standing moisture.
- Moisture buffering: each pebble absorbs water and releases it slowly, evening out short dry spells.

Hydroponic and soil applications
In hydroponics and semi-hydroponics, expanded clay pebbles can act as the sole growing medium. In soil-based setups they work best as a drainage layer or mulch, helping prevent overwatering while keeping humidity a little higher around the root zone.
