Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix

Repotting into this mix helps maintain the low-nutrient, high-moisture environment carnivorous plants need.

• Water quality first: prepare rainwater, distilled or reverse-osmosis water in advance – avoid tap water wherever possible.
• When to repot: repot when the old medium has compacted, turned foul-smelling or no longer wets evenly, or when plants outgrow their pot.
• Remove old medium: gently ease the plant from its pot and remove as much of the old substrate as possible.
• Rinse roots: rinse roots under lukewarm distilled or rainwater to clear remaining particles.
• Trim dead foliage: carefully remove dry or decaying leaves and traps with clean scissors.
• Prepare the pot: add a thin base layer of Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix to create a stable, moisture-retentive foundation.
• Planting depth: position the plant so the crown sits just above the surface or only lightly covered, depending on the species.
• Backfill and settle: fill around the roots with mix, lightly pressing to secure the plant without compressing the substrate.
• First watering: water thoroughly with low-mineral water, then place the pot in a shallow tray and keep a small water level topped up.
• Ongoing care: maintain high light appropriate to the species and keep the mix consistently moist; do not add fertiliser to the substrate.
