Base Soil Mix – Peat-free foundation for custom soil blends
Base Soil Mix is a versatile, peat-free starting point for plant lovers who prefer to build their own substrates. It offers a nutrient-rich, balanced base that you can adapt with perlite, pumice, bark and other amendments to suit different plant groups.
Why Base Soil Mix is useful in a plant collection
- Fully customisable: works as a general houseplant mix on its own or as a base for aroids, succulents and more.
- Peat-free and enriched: coco-based with organic nutrients instead of traditional peat-heavy soil.
- Improved moisture and aeration: holds water while keeping enough air around the roots.
- Consistent quality: blended to behave predictably when you add mineral components.
How Base Soil Mix behaves with water
On its own the mix retains moisture moderately and is suitable for many standard houseplants. Adding drainage materials such as perlite, pumice or horticultural grit makes it drier and more free-draining, while adding more organic material makes it heavier and slower to dry.
When Base Soil Mix is a good choice
Use this substrate if you want one reliable base for multiple custom recipes instead of buying many different ready-made mixes. It is suitable as a standalone medium for many common houseplants, or as the “core” that you adjust for plant groups like aroids, succulents, orchids or terrarium setups.
For more detailed guidance on how to design mixes and when to refresh them, see our houseplant substrate overview and the repotting guide.
