Base Soil Mix

Use Base Soil Mix both as a direct repotting medium for many houseplants and as the core of custom recipes.

• As a foundation for custom mixes: combine Base Soil Mix with perlite, pumice or grit for better drainage, or with orchid bark and husk chips for epiphytic plants like Anthurium and Hoya.
• Choosing ratios: increase mineral amendments if pots stay wet too long; keep more Base Soil Mix if plants prefer slightly higher moisture.
• Preparation: before repotting, gently remove as much old soil as possible by squeezing the pot and easing the plant out.
• Clean the roots: rinse roots under lukewarm water to wash away remaining soil and give the plant a fresh start.
• Trim dead foliage: remove dead or damaged leaves with clean scissors so energy goes into new growth.
• Prepare the new pot: add a thin base layer of Base Soil Mix (or your customised blend) to form a well-draining foundation.
• Position the plant: place the plant so the root crown sits just below the surface and backfill with mix, keeping roots spread out.
• Settle the substrate: lightly pat the mix for stability without compacting it.
• First watering: water thoroughly after repotting to help the substrate settle around the roots and remove remaining air pockets.

Monitor how quickly the mix dries in your conditions and tune future blends by adding more mineral or organic components until the drying time suits your watering habits.

• Water retention capacity: around 9 % as measured; overall water behaviour is strongly influenced by how much extra structure you add.
• Structural stability: typically 2–3 years indoors; fibrous organic components gradually degrade and may slightly lower pH over time.
• Bioactive? No – intended as a nutrient-rich base rather than a dedicated bioactive substrate.
• Pet-safe? No – contains fertiliser and activated carbon and is not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
