Anthurium regale is a breathtaking centerpiece for serious collectors, revered for its huge, velvety, heart-shaped leaves etched with dramatic white veins. Native to the humid pre-montane forests of central Peru, this rare tropical gem belongs to the Cardiolonchium section of Anthuriums, alongside other velvet-leaf icons. With the right care, Anthurium regale transforms any indoor space into a lush, sophisticated rainforest retreat.
First scientifically described by Eduard André in 1888, Anthurium regale is native to the slopes of the Huallaga River valley and surrounding areas of central Peru. It thrives at elevations of 600 – 1200 meters in humid tropical forests, growing in rich, well-drained soils. The local climate features 80 – 90% humidity, average temperatures of 18 – 26°C, and annual rainfall exceeding 2500 mm. In nature, its leaves can surpass 1 meter in length, supported by strong, thick petioles adapted to filtered light and high moisture environments.
The genus name "Anthurium" comes from the Greek "anthos" (flower) and "oura" (tail), referring to the spadix structure. The species name "regale" means "royal" in Latin, fitting the majestic presence of its enormous velvet foliage.
Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can easily scorch the delicate velvet surface.
Optimal: 8 – 10 hours daily of bright, filtered light. Supplement with grow lights in winter if necessary.
Maintain 80 – 90% humidity year-round. Use humidifiers, plant cabinets, or humidity trays if needed.
Keep temperatures stable between 18 – 26°C. Avoid drops below 16°C to prevent stress and fungal issues.
Allow the top 10 – 15% ofthe substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Consistent moisture is crucial; avoid letting the rootball dry out completely.
Use a very airy, organic mix: 40% orchid bark, 30% coconut coir, 20% perlite, and 10% compost.
During active growth, fertilize monthly with a diluted balanced fertilizer. In cooler months, fertilize only if the plant is actively producing a new leaf.
Repot every 1 – 2 years, choosing a breathable pot with good drainage. Avoid overpotting, which can lead to root rot.
Best propagated by division or careful separation of basal offsets with attached roots.
Anthurium regale can adapt to semi-hydroponic setups, but transitions must be very gradual to avoid root shock. Monitor carefully for signs of stress during the transition period.
In optimal conditions, mature plants may produce slender spadices with pale spathes. Indoor flowering is rare. Cross-pollination is required for viable seed production.
Spider mites, thrips, and aphids may appear. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Caused by low humidity or light stress. Increase humidity and adjust placement if needed.
Usually due to inconsistent watering or nutrient deficiencies. Adjust your watering routine and supplement with balanced fertilizer.
Triggered by waterlogged soil. Use a fast-draining, chunky substrate and moderate watering.
Result of excessive direct sunlight exposure. Move to a bright but protected location.
