Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' is a high-contrast variegated agave that reads like living sculpture: a broad, pale centre band runs down each thick leaf, framed by powdery blue-grey margins and finished with a long terminal spine. Growth is slower than standard Agave americana, which helps the rosette stay visually “tight” for longer in containers. Give Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' intense light, fast drainage, and a full dry-down between waterings, and it will reward you with crisp form and serious presence for years.
Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' is a garden form known from cultivation rather than a specific wild locality. It’s widely grown as an ornamental because the centre stripe stays bold and the rosette looks “finished” even when young. In containers, performance depends on two basics: light strong enough to keep leaves firm, and a substrate that never stays wet around the base.
Propagation is typically done through basal offsets. With maturity (or after flowering), additional plantlets may also appear, offering extra ways to continue the plant line. Handle carefully: spines cut easily, and sap can irritate skin.
Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' is monocarpic: a mature rosette flowers once and then declines. Despite the “century plant” nickname often linked to Agave americana, flowering commonly happens after a decade or more, and timing can stretch longer in cool climates. When it finally blooms, the flower spike is dramatic and very tall.
In cultivation, this plant is most commonly sold as Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' and also appears under older labels such as Agave americana f. medio-picta alba. A related published horticultural name, Agave americana var. mediopicta (Hovey) Trel., was published in L.H. Bailey’s Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (1: 235, 1914) and is treated as a synonym of Agave americana subsp. americana. For shopping and everyday care, the cultivar name is the clearest identifier.
Ready for a statement plant with a bright centre stripe and serious structure? Add Agave americana 'Mediopicta Alba' to your cart and build a variegated succulent display that stays sharp for the long run.
