Dracaena (Sansevieria) zeylanica 'Narrow' is a cultivar of Dracaena zeylanica (L.) Mabb., still often sold under the older genus name Sansevieria. Commonly called bowstring hemp, this evergreen perennial is native to South and Southeast Asia, especially India and Sri Lanka. A close relative of the well-known âmother-in-lawâs tongue,â this form is distinguished by its noticeably narrower foliage. The long, sword-like leaves are vivid green with subtle horizontal striping, creating a refined, upright silhouette that suits modern interiors.
Dracaena zeylanica originates from India, Sri Lanka, and surrounding regions, where its fibrous leaves were historically used for bowstrings, giving rise to the common name âbowstring hemp.â Once classified in the genus Sansevieria, it is now placed in Dracaena following molecular research. The 'Narrow' cultivar was selected for its slimmer foliage, offering a different texture from the broader-leaved standard type.
Dracaena zeylanica 'Narrow' combines the toughness of bowstring hemp with a more refined look. Its slim leaves create a sleek, upright profile that pairs well with contemporary décor while retaining the classic resilience of snake plants. For collectors and beginners alike, it offers both visual interest and reliability.
The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek ÎŽÏÎŹÎșαÎčΜα (drakaina), meaning âfemale dragon,â a reference to the red resin (âdragonâs bloodâ) produced by some species. The epithet zeylanica refers to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), part of the plantâs native range.
If you want a tough yet elegant snake plant with a slimmer silhouette, Dracaena zeylanica 'Narrow' is an excellent choice. Order today and enjoy its refined look, drought tolerance, and low-maintenance care in your home or office.
