Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii', formerly known under the genus Sansevieria, is a classic cultivar loved for its tall, upright leaves with silvery-green patterns and broad golden-yellow margins. Its striking form, extreme resilience, and low care requirements make it a staple for plant lovers and interior designers alike.
Growth height: Typically reaches 70 – 120 cm indoors.
Leaf color: Dark green centers with creamy yellow edging and subtle horizontal banding.
Origin: Native to dry savanna and rocky outcrops in West Africa, especially Nigeria.
Lifecycle: Evergreen perennial forming dense vertical leaf clusters from underground rhizomes.
Best in bright, indirect light but adapts to shade and interior corners. Avoid long hours of direct sun, which can burn leaf edges.
Water only when soil is bone dry – overwatering is the most common mistake. Use a moisture meter or lift the pot to gauge dryness by weight.
Use well-draining cactus or succulent substrate with added pumice or perlite. Always plant in containers with drainage holes to avoid root rot.
Prefers 18 – 27°C and tolerates short dips to 10°C if kept dry. Does well in average home humidity with no extra care needed.
Fertilize every 6 – 8 weeks if actively growing using a low-nitrogen houseplant feed. Pause feeding during low-light periods.
Divide rhizomes with pups during repotting for identical plants. Leaf cuttings can root in water or soil, but often lose their variegation.
Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base with sterile scissors. Wipe dust off the leaves monthly to support healthy photosynthesis.
Adapts well to semi-hydro setups like LECA if roots are oxygenated and not constantly wet.
Symptoms include a mushy base, yellowing leaves, or a foul smell. Remove affected parts and repot into dry, fresh soil with good drainage.
Brown patches are usually sunburn or cold exposure. Yellow edges may result from nutrient deficiency or insufficient light.
Spider mites and mealybugs can appear in dry conditions. Treat with insecticidal soap, neem oil, or introduce beneficial insects.
Dracaena: From Greek “drakaina” meaning “female dragon,” referencing the red resin in some species.
trifasciata: Latin for “three-banded,” describing the striped leaf pattern.
Laurentii: Named after Belgian botanist Émile Laurent, who worked on the genus in the late 19th century.
How often should I water it? Only when the soil is completely dry – typically every 2 – 4 weeks.
Why are the leaves soft or yellow? Likely overwatering or cold damage. Check roots and adjust placement and care.
Can I propagate it from a single leaf? Yes, but the variegation may not carry over. Division is more reliable for true-to-type clones.
