Brighamia insignis, commonly known as the 'Hawaiian Palm' or 'Ōlulu', is a unique stem succulent endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Despite its palm-like appearance, it belongs to the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). Characterized by a bulbous, water-storing stem and a rosette of glossy green leaves, this plant adds an exotic touch to indoor spaces. Notably, it has been extinct in the wild since 2019, making cultivated specimens vital for its preservation.
Native to the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and Niihau, Brighamia insignis thrived on steep sea cliffs and rocky outcrops at elevations up to 480 meters. The species faced numerous threats, including habitat loss, invasive species, and the extinction of its natural pollinator – a specific hawk moth species. As a result, it has been classified as extinct in the wild since 2019 . Conservation efforts now rely on cultivated specimens and manual pollination to ensure its survival.
The genus name Brighamia honors William Tufts Brigham, an American botanist and geologist. The species epithet insignis means "remarkable" or "distinguished" in Latin, reflecting the plant's unique appearance. Despite its common name, the 'Hawaiian Palm' is not a true palm but a member of the bellflower family.
Embrace the opportunity to cultivate a piece of botanical history with Brighamia insignis. Its distinctive form and ease of care make it a captivating addition to any indoor plant collection. By nurturing this plant, you contribute to the preservation of a species once native to the Hawaiian cliffs.
