Spical (Ulti-Mite) Neoseiulus californicus – Biological Control for Spider Mites
Important: Beneficial insects are only shipped to Germany, France, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg due to their short shelf life and the need for fast delivery. Orders ship once a week (Wednesdays) – please read the shipping disclaimer carefully to avoid delays.
What’s Included
✔ 5 Ulti-Mite sachets, covering up to around 5 m² for continuous control.
✔ Each sachet contains Neoseiulus californicus that are gradually released over several weeks – do not open the sachets.
How Neoseiulus californicus Works
- Spider mite control: feeds on eggs, larvae and nymphs to reduce outbreaks.
- Tolerant of drier air: more resilient than some other predatory mites in lower humidity.
- Prevention and treatment: can establish on plants before spider mites appear and also helps during early infestations.
- Survives on pollen: can persist at low pest levels by feeding on pollen, maintaining a background population.
Highly effective: in warm indoor conditions (around 20–32 °C), Neoseiulus californicus breeds steadily and can provide ongoing protection.
Best Conditions for Indoor Use
- Temperature: 15–35 °C.
- Humidity: 50 % RH or higher for optimal performance.
- Plant choice: not suitable for plants with strong glandular hairs (e.g. some tomato varieties), which are difficult for mites to move across.
🌱 Tip: Keep plants well watered (but not overwatered) and maintain moderate humidity to support predator activity.
How to Apply Neoseiulus californicus on Houseplants
These predatory mites are supplied in breeding sachets that provide a steady release.
- Small plants: 1 sachet per pot.
- Larger plants (e.g. Monstera, Ficus): 2–3 sachets per plant.
- Plant shelves or collections: 1 sachet per 0.5–1 m².
- Hang sachets near foliage, away from direct sun, heating vents and strong airflow.
- Do not open sachets: they are designed with exit holes for gradual release.
- 🔄 Reapply roughly every 4 weeks if spider mite pressure remains or new plants are added.
Target Pests
- Spider mites: feeds on eggs and juvenile stages and can help with adults in lighter infestations.
- Broad mites and cyclamen mites: can assist in reducing populations.
- Some thrips larvae: occasionally used as a secondary food source.
❌ Not effective against aphids, scale insects or mealybugs.
🔹 For heavy spider mite infestations, combine Neoseiulus californicus with Phytoseiulus persimilis, which actively hunts all spider mite life stages.
Storage and Handling for Indoor Use
- Store at room temperature (18–22 °C) until release.
- Use within about 48 hours of arrival for best results.
- Do not refrigerate; cold storage lowers effectiveness.
Pesticide Compatibility for Houseplants
- Avoid: neem oil, insecticidal soap sprayed directly on sachets or mites, sulphur products and pyrethroids.
- Best practice: wait 5–7 days after using such products before introducing predators and avoid spraying them afterwards.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
- Mites do not establish: check humidity and increase with a humidifier if air is very dry; avoid strong airflow and fans over the canopy; ensure no recent pesticide residues remain.
- Spider mites still visible: remember that Neoseiulus californicus mostly targets eggs and young stages. For rapid clean-up, add Phytoseiulus persimilis and combine with rinsing and pruning of heavily affected leaves.
Why Choose Neoseiulus californicus for Houseplants?
- Targets spider mites at multiple life stages: effective on eggs, larvae and nymphs.
- Handles drier indoor air better than many other predatory mites.
- Chemical-free: suitable where conventional insecticides are not desired.
- Provides long-term support: sachets release mites over several weeks.
