Alocasia Potting Mix

Use this mix whenever Alocasias complain about dry pockets in standard houseplant soil or react badly to missed waterings.

• Pots: choose containers with drainage holes; covers and cachepots should be emptied after watering so the inner pot does not sit in water.
• When to repot: repot when roots circle the pot, when the plant is repeatedly wilting despite watering, or when the old substrate has collapsed and holds water unevenly.
• Preparing the plant: gently loosen and remove as much tired mix as possible, then trim damaged or rotten roots with clean tools.
• Planting: add a base layer of Alocasia Potting Mix, position the plant centrally and backfill around the roots without compressing the mix hard.
• First watering: water thoroughly after repotting so the mix settles around the roots, then let the surface just dry before watering again.
• Humidity & environment: Alocasias generally respond best to higher ambient humidity (around 50–70 %) and stable warmth; avoid cold drafts directly on freshly repotted plants.

• Moisture behaviour: high water-holding capacity with added coarse material to keep air moving through the root zone.
• Organic content: coco-coir-based mix enriched with worm castings and other organic matter.
• Structure: combination of fine particles (coir, vermiculite) and coarse fractions (husk chips, bark, lava) to limit compaction.
• Structural stability: typically 3–4 years indoors before organic components noticeably decompose and drainage slows.
• Fertiliser level: primarily from organic sources; regular feeding during active growth is still recommended for strong foliage.
• Pet-safe? No – potting substrates are not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
