Philodendron 'Purple Congo' is a very easy-to grow cultivar hybrid and a great plant for beginners. It has large, oval, leathery leaves. It is a compact, self-heading Philodendron. Young leaves are a very deep red, with a purple ting (hence the name) red, maturing to burgundy red-purple and ultimately very dark glossy green.
From the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), from Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons "loving trees," form philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (form PIE der-drew-, form root deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
