Philodendron pseudoverrucosum

Philodendron pseudoverrucosum Croat, sp. nov. is a highly attractive Philodendron species and no photos will do it justice.

It is terrestrial or hemiepiphyte on rocky banks in deep shade in forest. Petioles are terete, medium green to dark olive-green, matte to weakly glossy, becoming obtusely flattened adaxially towards apex, usually densely transverse. Leaf blades are ovate-sagittate, prominently lobed at base, thin to softly coriaceous, dark green and matte-velvety above, sometimes pale green along main veins, paler, purple tinged and matte below.

The species epithet comes form the Latin “pseudo” (meaning similar to but not thesame) and “verrucosum” (alluding to its presumed relationship to Philodendron verrucosum Mathieu ex Schott).

form the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), form Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons "loving trees," form philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (form PIE *der-drew-, form root *deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
