Hoya thomsonii Hook.fil. has unusual, grey-green, velvety, pubescent foliage, often with irregularly distributed silver speckles. As H. thomsonii is a mountain variety, it should not be kept too warm. It grows in a cool location, which can also be sunny. The hairs on the leaves protect them from burning. In optimal conditions it quickly grows into a stunning climbing plant and will also flower willingly. It is very suitable for a hanging basket.

The genus was named in Modern Latin in honor of English gardener and botanist Thomas Hoy (c. 1750-1822).
