Homalomena rubescens 'Black emerald' aka 'Dark' is a cultivar of Homalomena rubescens Kunth. It is a very robust, quickly growing terrestrial herb. Petioles are erect, leaf blades are cordate, with a quilted blade tissue. When juvenile, the leaves emerge very dark green and when mature, they take on a very dark, almost black colouration.
The genus name "Homalomena" is derived from the Greek words for flat ("homalos") and moon ("mene").
