Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' is the classic deep-purple English lavender: a compact, woody subshrub with grey-green foliage and upright flower spikes that colour up strongly in summer. It forms a dense mound that holds its outline well, making it useful for repeating structure along paths, gravel borders, and sunny beds.
In good conditions it often sits around 40 to 60 cm tall and can spread to roughly 50 to 75 cm as it matures. The key to longevity is simple: lots of sun and a crown that dries quickly after rain.
Trim after flowering to keep the mound dense and to stop it becoming woody and bare at the base. Keep cuts in green growth; cutting hard into old wood leaves permanent gaps.
Sunny borders, gravel gardens, raised beds, and large pots suit it well. It also handles warm paving edges when the root zone drains freely.
Excellent in a large container with a free-draining mix. Keep drainage holes clear through winter and don’t let the pot sit constantly wet after rain.
