Your new plant has already been through packing, transport, and changing temperatures, so give it a sheltered start.
Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' brings tall, sky-blue flower spires on a compact, well-branched plant - classic delphinium drama without the extreme height of older border types. Sold as 3 plants, it’s ideal for repeating through a sunny bed so the border gains vertical lift in early to midsummer.
Delphiniums are at their best with plenty of light, fertile soil, and steady moisture while stems are stretching. A sheltered position matters: wind and heavy rain are what snap stems or flatten a peak display. Good drainage is still important, especially through winter, because crowns dislike sitting cold and wet.
Work organic matter into the planting area and water in thoroughly. In the first season, deep watering during dry spells keeps growth continuous and helps plants form a strong crown for next year. A spring mulch helps hold moisture. A heavy, wet mulch layer sitting on the crown can trap moisture and lead to rotting at the base.
Shorter delphiniums still benefit from support when buds form. A simple ring support or discreet canes placed early prevents last-minute rescue staking. After the first flush, cutting flowering stems back can trigger a smaller second wave, especially when moisture and nutrition are steady.
Give Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' sun, shelter, and a well-fed, well-drained root zone, and it delivers clean, upright spires that make a border look taller and more deliberate. Early staking keeps stems upright in wind and heavy rain.
Garden hybrid derived from tall delphinium lines with roots in European and Asian mountain species.
