Beaucarnea recurvata is a Mexican caudex tree grown indoors for its swollen, water-storing base and long narrow leaves that arch from the top of the stem. The thick trunk, sparse branching and ribbon-like crown give it the familiar ponytail palm shape, with the swollen base remaining the dominant feature at pot level.
Very bright light, a fast-draining mineral mix and a pot with open drainage match its desert to dry-shrubland background. Water deeply only after the substrate has dried well, as the caudex stores moisture and wet roots are the main weakness indoors.
